Regimental History

REGIMENTAL HISTORY:

The 2nd Missouri – a.k.a. Merrill’s Horse – was a three year cavalry regiment raised by Capt. /Col. Lewis Merrill. During the American Civil War (ACW) it was assigned to the western theater of operations.

Called to the field before it was completely organized and equipped, the 2nd was in continuous service in Missouri until 9/1865. However, according to the American Civil War Database, lack of reports on the part of regimental officers makes it impossible to give a detailed account of the unit’s activities.

On 1/8/1862, with the aid of a detachment of another Missouri militia unit, the 2nd completely annihilated a gang of Rebel guerillas in what was to be known as the battle of Silver Creek. Later, on 3/6/1862, it defeated an enemy force at Kirksville, MO.

In 6/1865 the 2nd was consolidated with the 10th Missouri Cavalry. This organization was mustered out on 9/19/1865.
