William and his brother Peter, both enlisted in Company H of the Reorganized Fourth Michigan Infantry on September 3, 1864, for 3 years service. William was just under 16 years old at the time of his enlistment, but served faithfully until he was mustered out of service on May 26, 1866, at Houston, Texas.
