Joseph Bennett
Full Unit History

Civil War veteran: cook for Companies B and G, 56th Massachusetts Infantry. Born in St. Kitts when it was still a part of the British West Indies, he came to the United States as a free black person. He arrived in Seattle in 1894 and was mustered in as a comrade of Miller Post 31, GAR, before 1900. He was in receipt of a pension for his veteran service from July 1904. His normal trade was that of office building custodian. He battled a variety of medical conditions for many years, but he finally passed away at the Marine Hospital on Beacon Hill from a recent illness. His remains were cremated on 15 Jul 1935 and have not been located.
