He was born to Richard and Fannie Jackson Fields on August 3, 1836 in Fayette County, Tennessee while in the ownership of Alexander W. and Elizabeth Jane Fields. Green was the first in his family to volunteer to fight in the Civil War. He enrolled at Memphis Tennessee on December 23, 1864 and remained in Co. I, 2nd USCT Light Artillery until December 22, 1865. He was stationed at Camp Benton Barracks, just outside of St. Louis, Missouri. It was there he met and married Martha Flinn of Mississippi in 1865. Martha brought into the family a little boy, Louis Hall from a previous slave marriage to Charles Hall; he was about 2 years old. Green would be the only father Louis would know and would take Green's last name.
The family moved around after the war. For several years they lived in Hickory Withe, Tennessee; moved to South St. Louis in 1868 and then moved to Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis County, Missouri and eventually moving to Seattle in 1893. Their son, Louis remained in St. Louis when Green and Martha moved to Seattle. They lived at several addresses in Seattle: 2713 – 4th Street; 213 – 4th Avenue North; and finally 1924 – 1st Avenue West.
His wife Martha would return to St. Louis just after the death of her son, Louis and remained there until her death October 18,1932.
He was a member of the John Miller, GAR.
Services for Green Fields were held at Temple Baptist Church at 2:00 pm on August 3. Burial was at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery on 700 West Raye Street.
