As “David STARKHILL”, he enlisted at Camp Nelson, KY, on 30 May 1864. He gave his age as 19, his occupation as laborer, and his birthplace as Boyle County, KY. He was a slave at enlistment; his owner was John (or Joseph) Starkhill of Boyle County, KY. Reduced from Corporal to Private on 15 Aug 1865.
He was on detached service to the hospital at Ringgold Barracks, TX, from 10 Apr 1866 to Feb 1867. He mustered out on 2 Apr 1867 at Brazos de Santiago, TX.

His Army pension card shows that “David Starkhill” was an alias for David S Slaughter and he served in the 114th USCI.
