NOTES:
T W O T O F I V E A N D T W O W I N
James F Tostevin, a member of Company K, 4th (Minnesota) regiment, has written
to his father in this city an interesting statement of his adventures near Vicksburg.
As the regiment was sent forward, he in company with Peter Sherry were left behind on
detached duty, with orders to follow the regiment as soon as they were at liberty.
Having completed their detached service, they started to join their regiment, and
night coming on, a halt was made on a plantation, where the contrabands prepared
their supper. During the night they were in the woods nearby. Following their safe
guides they started forth to reconnoiter, and soon succeeded in "surrounding" a rebel
Captain, Sergeant and three privates. The Captain and Sergeant were wounded during
the "surrounding" process, but the St Paul boys marched them all into camp and
delivered them over as prisoners of war.
