James Underwood Chamberlin was born June 29, 1838 in Berkshire County, Massachusetts to Elizabeth [Underwood] and Martin Chamberlin. He fought in the Confederal Army in the Civil war until his capture in 1864. He married Almena P. Acken in 1868 in Pennsylvania; however, she died in 1883. James first settled in Klickitat County in 1888. in 1898, he married once again, this time to Mrs. Esther [Rodgers] Richmond. James passed away on May 19, 1925 in Portland, Oregon.
