Regimental History

REGIMENTAL HISTORY:

The 52nd Kentucky was a one year infantry regiment. During the American Civil War (ACW) it served in the western theater of operations.

In 6/1864 elements of the 52nd clashed with enemy forces under Confed. Gen. Morgan at Mt Sterling and Cynthiana, KY.  That July other members of the unit swept through Webster and Union Counties. They fought Sypert’s band of irregulars a Geiger Lake scattering and killing/wounding over thirty (30). On 10/21/1864 other Rebels were defeated at Hopkinsville.

In 8/1864 saw the 52nd move into Tennessee. 10/1864 found them in Alabama. By the end of that year the unit was resisting a Confederate incursion into western Kentucky with the regiment’s final clash with the enemy at Nashville, TN (12/15-16).

Family History

PERSONAL/FAMILY HISTORY:

Thomas B. Brown was born circa 1846. His place of birth was within the State of Kentucky.

Father of Thomas was J. M. Brown. His mother was Alzirah H. (no nee) Brown.

In 1863 Thomas enlisted in the U.S. Army and became Private Thomas B. Brown. His unit was the 52nd Kentucky Infantry.

The 1870 U.S. Census for Scates Mill Christian County, KY noted the residency of Thomas 24, his wife, Martha 21, and two young sons.

1880. The Browns were still in Christian County, KY, but by then farming in or near the community of Camby located in Christian County.  In addition to Thomas and Martha, children in the home were: Lewis “Louie” Brown (11), Tilda Brown (9), John Brown (7) and Martin Brown (5). All were born in Kentucky.

On 9/4/1901 while living in Kentucky, Thomas applied for and was granted a U.S. Government disability pension  based on his days of Civil War soldiering.  Details of the monthly financial stipend are not known.

Thomas died on 2/8/1905 in Whatcom County, WA. He was/is buried in that county’s Enterprise Cemetery.

T.B. Brown, aged 59 years, residing near Mountain View, died Wednesday evening of periodontitis,* after an illness of several months.  He leaves a wife and nine grown children to mourn his loss. Mr. Brown has resided in the vicinity of Ferndale for a number of years and had a wide circle of friends who join with the bereaved ones in mourning the loss of their loved one.  Funeral services will be conducted today at the family residence.  The remains were interred in the Enterprise Cemetery.

Following her husband’s passing Martha petitioned the U.S. Government to continue receiving at least a portion of his pension as widow’s support. Likely, the request was granted, but without accessing her pension file, the details of her monthly allotment remain unknown.

And Martha’s death and final resting place? Answers are not available ^for” either of these questions.
