Sickles died on September 26, 1938 at the Washington Soldiers Home in Orting and is buried there in Washington Soldiers Home Cemetery, near his comrade and fellow MOH recipient Albert O'Connor.[3] He was the last surviving MOH recipient of the American Civil War[4]

On May 11, 1861, at the age of sixteen, he enlisted in Company B of the 7th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on March 31st, 1865, at Gravelly Run, Virginia, when he “with a comrade (Albert O’Connor), recaptured a Union Officer from a deteachment of 9 Confederates, capturing 3 and dispersing the remainder.”
