While September 1881 has been suggested, the date 22 September 1886 is more realistic. The widow filed a pension claim on 10 May 1887 and it was declined because of her remarriage soon after, before the adjudication was completed. Generally speaking, widows of veterans did not wait seven years to claim their benefit for early service-connected awards under either the "J" or "A" laws. The date 22 September 1886, according to family sources, was claimed as the date of death by the widow in her declined claim. See National Archives file W O 354,719.
