John Huntington was a resident at Osage, Iowa, when he enlisted as a private on December 9, 1861. He was mustered into Company H, 16th Iowa Infantry on January 18, 1862. Private Huntington was wounded in action at Iuka, Mississippi on September 19, 1862, and after treatment was returned to duty. He re-enlisted on March 11, 1864. Private Huntington was listed as missing in action at Atlanta, Georgia, on July 22, 1864, but within a few days safely returned to his regiment. He was promoted to corporal on January 19, 1865.
