Born to John and Ella Thurston Jackson in Jessamine, Kentucky. He was one of five children. At age 18, he joined the U.S. Colored Troops and was stationed at Camp Nelson, Kentucky. He married twice: Maria about 1868 and Leathe about 1905. He is the father of eight and stepfather of one. He spent 30 years in Ohio before moving to Louisiana. By 1910, he was living in Yakima County, Washington. He was a resident of Seattle for a five years before his death in 1916. Civil War Soldier: Co. A, 6th Regiment USC Heavy Artillery Cannot find burial of any of Spencer wives.
